How to Make a Dog Bowtie
A dog bowtie is a fancy addition to your pup's collar.dog bowtie It's perfect for special occasions or if you want to add some flair to an everyday walk. These handmade bow ties can be made from any type of fabric and are easy to assemble. The bow portion can even be slipped over a regular collar for a quick change of style.
Before making a dog bowtie, you'll need to prepare the collar portion of the collar.dog bowtie To do so, gently wrap a soft tape measure around your dog's neck. Make a note of the measurement where the base of the collar would normally sit. This will be the collar's length.
For small and medium dogs, cut a 4-inch by 9-inch (10-cm by 23-cm) rectangle. For large dogs, cut a 6-inch by 11-inch (15-cm by 28-cm) rectangle.
With the wrong side of each piece facing up, fold the width/short edges of the body rectangle in by 1/2 inch (1.25 cm). This will hide the raw edges of these edges and make a smooth edge for the front of the bow. You'll need to do this for both sides of the ribbon.
Once you've done this, stitch along the two lengthwise edges of the rectangle. You can either do this by hand or use your sewing machine for added durability. Alternatively, you could simply use fabric glue for a no-sew option.
When you're done stitching the edges, turn the bow body right-side out. This will ensure that the final bow has a clean, professional appearance and that you don't end up with any visible seams in the center of the ribbon.
Next, grab your center strip. Take piece B and fold it over itself twice (width-wise). This will create a strip that is approximately 1" wide. You'll need to experiment a bit with how tightly to pinch this strip - it should be tight enough to create the desired bow shape, but not so tight that it becomes uncomfortable for your dog.
Finally, secure one of the self-adhesive Velcro squares to the top side of the end of your bow body and a matching square to the bottom side of the opposite end. Attach both of these squares, then test the bow on your dog to ensure that it fits comfortably and securely around their neck.
If everything looks good, it's time to add the center strip to your dog bowtie. Pinch the lengthwise center of your bow and wrap the center strip around it, then pin it in place to hold the bow together. Be sure to leave at least one finger's worth of space between the bow center and the body strip – this will be needed to slip the bow over the collar portion later on. Stitch the center strip closed, if necessary.
